Early Work is a new black-and-white photo collection published by contemporary photography master Stephen Shore in 2025 by MACK Books, a British independent publisher. For the first time, this work fully discloses the unexposed images he took between 1960 and 1965 (that is, his teenage years old at the age of 13 to 18), revealing the black-and-white dark room roots of the pioneer of color photography before he became a master.

The core and historical background of the work

The starting point of a talented teenager: Stephen Shore received a Kodak darkroom set from his uncle at the age of 6 and sold the work to Edward Steichen, then director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. This book records the precocious period of crazy experiments and honing the viewing perspective before he entered Andy Warhol's "The Factory" at the age of 17.

Streets in New York in the 1960s: The image focuses on the daily life of Upper Manhattan and the Hudson Valley in New York. He was deeply influenced by the documentary master Walker Evans, aiming the camera at commuters, schoolchildren on church stairs, old-school Cadillacs and street scenes. The picture is calm, restrained and rigorous in structure, showing his ageless compositional talent.

Turning point to the factory: The end of the book includes photos taken by Shore on the first day of his entry into the Warhol "factory" in 1965, which later became an important incubation site for his artistic career.
