Alec Soth Songbook(Signed)

Songbook is one of the masterpieces of contemporary American documentary photography master Alec Soth published by MACK in 2015. This work is known as a milestone in contemporary American photography. With calm, humorous and melancholy visual language, it pieces together a grand and lonely picture of contemporary American society.
This photo collection abandons his most famous color blockbuster style in the past, and the whole book adopts high-contrast black-and-white photography.
Core background and creative motivation
Disguised as a local reporter: Between 2012 and 2014, Alec Soth and his writer friend C.R. Grimmer disguised himself as a reporter for the fictional newspaper LBM Dispatch (and commissioned by other magazines) and drove across many states in the United States (including New York, Ohio, Michigan and California.).
Out of the narrative vein: The core of Soth's creation lies in **"drawing"**. He took a large number of traditional documentary news photos for local newspapers during the trip, but when he finally compiled them into Songbook, he deliberately eliminated all the original news headlines, time, place and event context of all the photos.
Metaphor of music: The title "Songbook" comes from a popular song collection in the United States in the mid-twentieth century (such as "The Great American Songbook"). Soth believes that these photos are like lyrics. Although they have lost the specific context of reporting, they have turned into an "American melody" that can trigger collective resonance.
Shooting theme and core tension
Desire for link and collective loneliness: The core of this work is to show human desire for "community link" and the accompanying "individual loneliness".
The appearance of American beings under the camera: Soth went deep into the grass-roots life in the inland of the United States and recorded many pictures full of tension:
Local gatherings, dance parties, men's clubs and gatherings for the elderly.
Men and women hugging each other tightly on the dance floor, strange individuals standing alone in the desolate open space.
Artificial landscapes full of surrealism and abandoned town corners.
The dramatic effect of the flash: He frequently uses a strong hand-held flash to make the picture look like a forensic photo or a black-and-white snapshot of the legendary criminal journalist Weegee in the 1930s. This kind of light "isolates" the subject from the dark background, further amplifying the sense of alienation of the character.
Artistic achievements and historical positioning
Tribute to tradition: This work pays tribute to Robert Frank's classic photo collection The Americans in spirit, which also captures the soul of American culture in road travel, but Soth pays more attention to the digital age, and the physical community gradually The spiritual appearance of the United States after the solution.
Calmness and empathy: Although many pictures have an absurd and bizarre sense of humor, Soth's shots have always maintained a gentle empathy, not irony, but show the vulnerability and dignity of ordinary people in the face of life.
