Ryuichi Sakamoto - Guanyin. Ryuichi Sakamoto (seeing sound, hearing time) is a large-scale international tour retrospective exhibition of the late Japanese music master Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952–2023). The exhibition breaks the single dimension of traditional film soundtracks or pianists, and comprehensively reviews the "installation music" and cross-border art practices that have transformed music into space experience since the 2000s. [1,2,3,4]

💡 The core concept of the exhibition

The origin of the name: It comes from the dialogue between Ryuichi Sakamoto and the philosopher Shozo Omori in the 1980s, reflecting that music is not only the passage of time, but also listening to time itself.

Perception boundary: The exhibition focuses on how sound is "seen" and "perceived", and breaks through the listening restrictions of traditional music through natural and technological media such as water, fog, meteorology, earthquake data and electromagnetic waves.

Artist cooperation: Gathering Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani, Daido Manabe, Carsten. Carsten Nicolai, Abichabang. The crystallization of the efforts of cross-border artists such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Zakkubalan. [1, 2, 3]

🎵 Classic key works

"Async-immersion": Based on Sakamoto's most personal album "async" (2017), it turns musical instruments, plants and studio micro-obisms into sensory flow through asynchronous spatial images and multi-channel sound. [One, two]

"Is Your Time": Using a piano that survived the 2011 East Japan Earthquake Tsunami and was "retuned" by nature, it receives global earthquake data and plays it automatically, reflecting the contrast between human and nature. [1]

"LIFE - fluid, invisible, inaudible...": Deconstruct the 1999 opera "LIFE" and create an audio-visual sense between transparency and opaque with acrylic aquariums, water films and ultrasonic waves hanging in the darkroom.
