Victor Burgin The Camera Essence And Apparatus
Victor Burgin The Camera Essence And Apparatus
The Camera: Essence and Apparatus is a heavyweight collection of theories published by MACK in 2018 by British conceptual artist and image theorist Victor Burgin. This book is a collection of the author's core discourses on the evolution of cameras, photography and images for more than 40 years from 1975 to 2017.
The core concept of theory
Media continuity: Burgin opposes the absolute fracture between "analogy (Filin)" and "digital (virtual)". He believes that from the perspective paintings of the Renaissance to today's virtual cameras (computer-generated images / CGI), the essence is based on the same perspective reproduction system in the West.
Psychology and ideology: He emphasized that image is by no means a simple "optical experience", but a psychological event. Images and language are inseparable and deeply affect the construction of beliefs, values, collective memories and desires in human society.
Interdisciplinary research: The article widely uses Semiotics, Psychoanalysis and Feminism to deeply analyze the role of photos in daily life and politics.
