Hujar:Contact (Contact Sheets)

[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

**Hujar: Contact** was co-published in May 2026 by The Morgan Library & Museum in New York and MACK Books, a British independent publisher. A collection of heavyweight photography. This book is the official exhibition catalogue launched in conjunction with the large-scale exhibition of the same name "Hujar: Contact" held in New York from May 22 to October 25, 2026.
Core features and concepts of books
This book is not a traditional collection of photographs, but focuses on the legendary American cueer documentary photographer **Peter Hujar (1934–1987)**'s never-public "Contact Sheets" :
Decryption of the creative process: The book contains more than 110 precious records from more than 5,700 printed substrates in the Morgan Library collection. These negatives contain oily strokes, crop marks and editorial notes left by Hujar himself, which directly show readers how a master chooses, composes and decides the thinking process of the final work from the whole volume of negatives.
Recording the underground cultural circle of New York: The background is like a movie film, dynamically and privately restoring his social interaction and intimate relationship with the celebrities who defined the culture of East Village in New York in the 1960s and 1980s. The book contains the early writings of Susan Sontag, David Wojnarowicz, Candy Darling and Fran Lebowitz. Period portraits and unexposed pictures.
First Transcription of Work Log: In addition to negatives, this book was completely transcribed and annotated by scholar Olivia McCall for the first time, **"Job Books"** shot more than 1,000 of Houjar's career record, to study the second half of the 20th century. Art and politics in the context of the gay liberation movement and the AIDS crisis are of great historical value.
