  • Walter Hopps:
  • Pontus Hultén:
  • Johannes Cladders:
  • Jean Leering:
  • Harald Szeemann:
  • Franz Meyer:
  • Seth Siegelaub:
  • Werner Hofmann:
  • Walter Zanini:
  • Anne d'Harnoncourt:
  • Lucy Lippard:

A Brief History of Curating is a heavyweight published in 2008 by contemporary independent curator Hans Ulrich Obrist (commonly known as HUO). This book is regarded as a must-read classic in the field of modern contemporary art curation, and has pioneered the writing of art history from the "curator's perspective". [1]

This book is not a stereotyped textbook, but consists of a series of in-depth interview records. Through dialogues with 11 legendary curators who pioneered in the 1960s and 1970s, Aubrist outlined the evolution of the curating profession over the past half century - from early independent curating practices, avant-garde institutional experimental programs in Europe and the United States, to the rise of the Kassel Documenta and various large-scale biennials and art fairs. [ 1, 2, 3]

📚 The core structure and interview list of books

This book contains precious dialogues between Aubrist and the following 11 key curators of modern art ecology (in order of the English version): [1]

Walter Hopps: a legendary American curator, promoting Pupu art and conceptual art.

Pontus Hultén: the first artistic director of Pontus Hultén, famous for his cross-disciplinary exhibitions.

Johannes Cladders: German curator, who has done a lot of avant-garde practice in the Gladbach Museum in Munich.

Jean Leering: The curator of the Van Aber Museum in the Netherlands is committed to linking art with the public.

Harald Szeemann: Defines the curator as the soul of "the creator of independent space" and "spiritual guest labor".

Franz Meyer: Swiss art historian and curator, who strongly supports artists such as Giacometti and Barcelitz.

Seth Siegelaub: the behind-the-scenes pusher of conceptual art, transforming the "exhibition catalog" itself into an exhibition space.

Werner Hofmann: The curator of the Hamburg Art Museum has a deep reflection on the classification of art history and the function of museums.

Walter Zanini: an important curator in Brazil, who has planned the São Paulo Biennial twice.

Anne d'Harnoncourt: the long-term curator of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and an important maintainer of Du Xiang's collection of works.

Lucy Lippard: an influential feminist art critic, writer and conceptual art curator. [1]

🌟 The core value of this book

Redefining curators: The book shows how curators can transform from the traditional "museum collection keeper" (the original Latin meaning of Curator) to co-creators, spatial discussants and freelancers who roam the world side by side with artists.

Preservation of oral history: Through easy but profound dialogue, it reveals the unknown challenges, historical context and curatorial ideas behind many legendary exhibitions, providing a bridge for the younger generation of art workers to connect with past masters. [One, two]
