  • 書名的隱喻:書名「A Handful of Dust」取自同樣在 1922 年 10 月發表的 T.S.

"A Handful of Dust" is a classic in the history of photographic vision planned and written by David Campany, a famous British photographer, curator and writer. This book is not a collection of works by a single photographer, but a grand and speculative "dust visual history". It originally originated from the exhibition of the same name planned by Campany for the Le Bal Art Center in Paris, and then first published by MACK Press in 2015. (And the second edition was launched in 2017).

The core and thought of the work

The starting point of history: The narrative of the book assumes that modern history began in October 1922. At that time, the French avant-garde magazine published a photo of a glass artwork taken by Man Ray and placed by Marcel Duchamp in the studio that had accumulated dust for months. This photo was originally nicknamed "the scenery overlooked from the plane" and was later officially named **Dust Breeding**. It is both an abstract art and a realistic record, which has become the starting point for the discussion of the whole book.

Metaphor of the title of the book: The title of the book "A Handful of Dust" is taken from T.S., also published in October 1922. A classic verse in Eliot's famous poem The Waste Land: "I will show you fear in a dust."

Rebels of modern order: David Campany pointed out through this book that the "dust" that modern society strongly rejects and tries to maintain cleanliness and order is actually an unstoppable objective existence. It is the ultimate witness of history, conflict and the passage of time.

Content and inclusion lineup

Campany weaves macro historical events with micro images, spanning military aerial photography, the "black storm" sandstorm in the United States in the 1930s, Mussolini's dusty car during his lifetime, and extending to the Iraq War. The book systematically gathers avant-garde tabloids of the twentieth century, anonymous news photos, postcards, movie screenshots, and the classics of many masters:

Unique binding: The first edition published by MACK adopts a very unique **book-in-book** binding structure. The binding contains two soft-cover books, one of which can be pulled out and re-embedded. The design is very ingenious.
