如果將自身職業比喻為一條道路，那麼森山大道的攝影之路可說是非常漫長，然而他的旅程也並非一帆風順。1967 年憑藉作品「にっぽん劇場」榮獲日本寫真批評家協会新人賞而一舉成名。1968-70 年參與別具傳奇的先鋒雜誌《PROVOKE》。更在 1972 年時達到生涯巔峰，他出版了《写真よさようなら（攝影啊再見）》，這部作品極為傑出，卻同時也聳立了一面他再也無法跨越的高牆。

森山大道開始思考著攝影的本質，並令他一度懷疑攝影，甚至放棄。在此之後，他陷入了極大的低潮，迷失在現實與攝影的漩渦裡。森山大道曾自述那段期間他無所事事，就只是四處閒晃。看似乎將要放棄攝影，然而在同時之間他也著手將手邊的作品整理，好比在為自己的攝影生涯做最後掙扎。

1972 年 7 月，森山大道首次發表個人出版的影像誌《記録1号》，16 頁的小冊，沒有固定主題，單純集結自身喜愛的作品。這一期間可說是他生涯中最艱難的奮鬥時期，他拋下原先順遂的道路，越過重重障礙，《記録》便是代表著他重新出發的起點。

此影像誌在 1973 年後因為製作成本過高而在出版五期後宣告中斷，2006 年，在出版人長澤章生的協助下，《記録》復刊，至 2017 年已出版至第 34 期。此書《記録》，便是集結了森山大道所出版的《記録1号》～《記録30号》，共 30 卷的全精選，書本大小與原版相同，共收錄 280 幅作品，由日本藝廊 Akio Nagasawa 出版。

While searching for “a minimum media for immediately printing photos taken in everyday life and showing them by hand to those around him”, Daido Moriyma launched a self-published photograph magazine Record in 1972.
Although the publication of this magazine was temporarily suspended in May in the following year when No. 5 issue was published, it was revived in 2006 and is continuously published even today.
A digest version of this magazine from No. 1 to No. 30 was published.
The reproduced photos are as large as the original, the postscripts by Moriyama himself are also included, and the number of the photos included amounts to 280.

Record can be said to be his starting point.
