With radically new interpretations of classical works The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen thrills it’s audience on stages all over the world.
For 15 years, the photographer Julia Baier travels with the world-class orchestra to the most famous concert halls in the world and is present at the highly acclaimed performances. But as a photographer her focus is not the perfect interplay on stage. She approaches each member of the orchestra that otherwise is mostly perceived only as a unit. The familiarity and friendship with the musicians, developped in so many years, allow her insights into the everyday life beyond the concerts. These include the intimate cooperation during rehearsals and CD recordings in the studio as well as the relaxed atmosphere while exploring foreign cities. The result are snapshots around the performances, often taken backstage: the preparations with physical exercises and the concentration when preparing the instruments - the general tension before and the great relief after the concert.
With surprising crops and perspectives Julia Baier draws attention to often overlooked details. With her pictures she transforms incidental props such as the chaos of garment bags and instrument cases, cables, music stands or backstage accessories into a graphical scenery. And she also keeps an eye on the audience.
Carefully observed and superbly photographed, designed with ease, melody and rhythm and accompanied by exciting texts by Michael Glasmeier and Manuel Brug plus travel notes by the musicians, ›In Tune‹ offers a view to the classical music business on, behind, in front and besides the stage.
