How to capture urban moments on phone, camera or SLR ...
‘Excellent … thorough and immensely enjoyable … Highly recommended’ – Amateur Photographer
‘Exceptional … a fascinating read for any photographer. Its variety of imagery, Gibson’s intelligent writing and quotes from other renowned photographers make itone of the best publications of its type I’ve seen’– Black & White Photography
Whether dark, edgy or humorous, street photography shows us that daily life can be a little surreal but also gently poignant. Photo sharing on Flickr and Facebook has rejuvenated the genre, and its spirit has been reborn.
This book is all about the spirit of street photography. David Gibson introduces the reader to twenty acclaimed contemporary street photographers, among them Bruce Gilden, Nils Jorgensen and Saul Leiter, and intersperses the profiles with twenty invaluable projects that deal with the practicalities of street photography and break down different approaches into clear concepts.
There is something for everyone in these activities, which use a variety of equipment and shots and suit all skill levels. Each project – which covers such subjects as how to shoot a face in a crowd, and how to train your eye to observe and capture the unexpected – is illustrated with step-by-step photographs, dos and don’ts, a final shot and written instructions.
David Gibson is one of the founder members of In-Public, the first modern international collective of street photographers. In-Public, which was founded in 2000, has been a pivotal influence worldwide on the growing popularity of street photography. A practising photographer himself, David is also a well-known and highly respected photography tutor, and has led workshops in London, Beirut, Athens, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Singapore and Stockholm. He also teaches a course on street photography at Central Saint Martins in London.
